For many years we have not had trail maps to hand out, trying to keep it green. While our network has lots of trail signage & maps, we have now gone one step further. Our trail map is now available on Avenza Maps.Β Download the app to know where you are at all times!
Highlands Nordic makes an effort to be environmently friendly, so weΒ do notΒ have any maps to hand onsite. Our ski and snowshoe trails are well marked at every intersection, with colour coded arrows and maps. We are happy to give adviceΒ for which trail to take. All of our ski trails are 30ft wide and are groomed for both classic and skate skiing.
General Overview
As a general rule our trails get more difficult with distance rather than the terrain. If you can handle the hills on the Blue you can handle the hill on Yellow and so on. You just come across more of them because the trail is longer.Β
The main exception to that Rule are the Black Diamond Loops on Red. The Millennium Loop, Quarry Loop and Woolner Loop have very steep downhills and uphills.
All ski trails are one way traffic.Β
All our trails are groomed with a classic track (two parallel grooves for the skis) on the right, and a wider flat area for skating on the left.
It is a stacked system. For example if you go out and do the Blue and want to add a Yellow Loop, it will bring you right back to the Blue.Β
Of course if a skier does not feel safe they should take off their skis, but be sure to walk on the side of the trail so not to be in the way of others skiing and to prevent damage to the track and trails. Footprints can punch holes into the trails that are very challenging to fix.Β
Recreational Downhill
All coloured trails finish with the Recreational Downhill, which would be defined as a medium sized hill.Β
Tealβs Tango - 3km
Tealβs Tango is our dog friendly ski trail. People welcome to ski (no snowshoers, only skiers) with their pup on a leash. It is a mostly flat loop with a very small uphill and a very small downhill. We have been working to plant trees but it is not a well sheltered trail. If it is a windy day it wont be as enjoyable. Beginners also do well on this trail.Β
On average the trail will take 30 to 45 minutes.
Green - 1.6km
Green trail is a great place to start for new skiers. It is sheltered in the trees. There is a small uphill, a not very steep but longer uphill, a gradual downhill. From there you connect with the rest of the trails. Look up when you reach the T junction! The other trails will be coming down from the right. Make sure you are all clear before taking your left back to the chalet.Β
On average the trail will take 20 to 30 minutes.
Blue - 3.1km
A great trail option if people want to βlevel upβ from the Green Trail. Or if you are looking to finish off the ski day with a quick loop. This trail is mostly in the trees.Β
S-Climb
Is a long S shaped hill that climbs up the Escarpment. If you reach the S-Climb and decide that you donβt want to do that hill there is a link to the left that cuts over to the Green Trail. If you can mange the S-Climb you will be able to manage most of the other uphills on the network.
Larryβs Glacier
The Glacier is a spot that Blue, Yellow, Purple, Orange and Red meet. You will visit this spot again before you return to the Chalet. This is a common spot to drop extra layers and pick them up when you are done.Β
Hairpin
To return to the Chalet you will need to take a downhill that includes a Hairpin turn. It is a sharp turn to the right.Β
On average the trail will take 30 to 45 minutes.Β
Yellow - 5.1km
This trail is mostly in the trees.Β
First Finger - about 1km

Purple - 8.5km
The Purple is a new addition. Born from Angusβ desire to skip as many hills as possible but still be able to enjoy the Back Red at the end of a long work day. This trail beelines it for the Back Red. It is a great choice for someone who is looking to mix up their trail choice or if you donβt have as much energy for the big hills. This trail will see some wind exposure on the Back Red.Β
This trail also includes the S-Climb, Larryβs Glacier, Back Red and Hairpin.
On average the trail will take 50 minutes to 75 minutes.Β
Orange - 9.4km
This trail will see some wind exposure on the Hawberry Loop.Β
