Trails continue to be in excellent shape! Chanse has regroomed everything with the Husky. We have some significant wind in the forecast today. I think we should count ourselves lucky that this wasn’t around when it was super cold! All that to say you will do better to find trails in the trees. Areas like Back Red, Woolner and Teal’s Tango will get quite drifted today. Maybe mix it up a bit! Something like Yellow but add Millennium, Second Finger and Back Orange. All trail with some good coverage but still getting some distance!

Today is Get Active Club! I will be skiing at 2PM today. Probably skate, but as always anyone is welcome to join with whatever technique. Angela will also be snowshoeing at 2PM if you are looking for a trail buddy!

A couple gentle reminders.

We love dogs are pleased that we can offer a place for them to run with you as you ski on Teal’s Tango but please no dogs in the building. As well ensure that you are only bringing your dogs on Teal’s Tango. The rest of the trails are not open for dogs.

The Upper Lot is reserved parking only. You will be asked to move to the Lower or North Lot if you are not a Highlands Nordic Staff member or someone with a Reserved Parking pass. This applies 7 days a week.

Thank you!

Chanse is cleaning up the trails with the Husky and it looks like we have a snowy day ahead of us! We got a decent amount of snow overnight and it continues to snow. You will find the trails snow-covered today and a little soft. It will be a great classic day if you have the choice! Come out and enjoy this winter day!

You may want to think about putting on some Easy Glide and ensure your skis are waxed with this new snow that has fallen.

January 25

Today marks 10 years of Larry’s passing, and some days it is just truly so hard to believe. For those who don’t Larry he is our founder and spirit of Highlands. He would be the cheery fellow at the Service Bench wearing the hat that didn’t quite cover his ears (he preached the importance of a hat to keep the heat in but hated things covering his ears if he could help it), handing out skis exciting to be bringing new people to the sport. Whether you knew Larry or not I hope you spend the day getting out doing something you are passionate about. Me? I’ll be out for a long ski and finish my day with a bucket of chicken wings. And if that doesn’t scream Larry I don’t know what does.

Onto the report of the day. We received a dusting of snow that Chanse has groomed with the Husky. Everything is in fantastic shape. What a great season so far! A little bit more wind today so you may find some drifting on the Back Red, Woolner and Teal’s Tango. It will be easy to find enough trails in the trees to skip those windy parts!

Looks like we are starting to see temperatures warm up today. Still a bit of wind which will cause some drifting on Back Red, Woolner and Teal’s Tango but other than that conditions are in great shape. It will be awesome skiing! Chanse has regroomed everything with the Husky.

I really hope these cold temperatures aren’t keeping you away from skiing! We have had some incredible skiing the last couple of days and that will continue. Proper layer choices and choosing trails in the trees makes all the difference in the world. There is a bit of wind predicted today so on key open spots there will be a bit of drifting. Such as Back Red, Woolner and Teal’s Tango.

Chanse has regroomed everything with the Husky. Night skiing is on tonight! Ensure to bring a headlamp as back up.

What would I be wearing while on the trails?

Top, 4 layers: my warmer base layer, merino baselayer that I use for a mid layer, a light fleece (I actually found the fleece too much for a solo ski, although would have kept it if I was skiing with others) and jacket on top.

Bottom, 2 layers (I never wear more than 2 just change the weight): my warmer base layer, and heavier outer pants. I forgot to add proper underwear! No cotton holds true to underwear just as much as your base layer.

Accessories 💁‍♀️: warm hat (Sauce Chill Toque), regular weight buff, warmest mitts (Auclair Gigatex, again I found these too much for a solo ski but good if I was skiing with someone), and my Lorpen socks. I usually put on some vaseline on my cheeks and lips to help cut the wind and add a layer of protection. It won’t help with frostbite but it helps with wind burn.

Another cool day out but with proper layers and trail choices your will find your day on the trails will be quite nice. The wind is picking up so I think you will find the first 100m is the worst. Once in the trees it makes a world of difference. Key spots like Back Red, Hawberry and Teal’s Tango will get drifted, but the core network will be in good shape.

Chanse has regroomed everything with the Husky!

We have a bit of a cold snap ahead of us but don’t skip out on your ski because of it! Pay attention to the winds and add some layers. Skiing in the cold can be some of the best skiing. We had some beautiful fluffy snow come down to mix into the base. Chanse has regroomed everything with the Husky.

Looks like in the morning the winds will be quite still and in the afternoon it picks up. Of course I will still be heading out for 2pm Ski Club! I will be classic skiing but skaters are also welcome.

Another classic January day! We have a great day of skiing ahead of us. Here’s where I will admit to you that yes it is super chilly out there BUT little to no wind called for today. This can make all the difference in the world. Trust me; add an extra layer and you will have the best ski.

Chanse has regroomed everything with the Husky. It is currently lightly snowing so you mind find things a little snow-covered if it keeps up. Still this silly wet spot on Woolner Loop but it is easy to avoid. The Green has been double tracked.

We are dealing with some sticky snow! Ensure your skis have been waxed and that you are using products like Easy Glide to help keep you moving on the trails.
