March 1

In like lion is the correct term today! Seems more like January than March but with some good layers and strategically chosen trails the skiing should be pretty good. We will see some drifting on the Back Red, Woolner and Teal’s Tango. Chanse has regroomed everything with the Husky.

We will be seeing you tomorrow for the sun rise ski? The mix of sun and cloud forecast seems to be in our favour for a decent view of the sun in the morning! See details below under upcoming events. .

February 28

Tim is riding in the drivers seat again this morning. Chanse might get used to the this sleeping in thing. We are setting up for an interesting day. It will be fast and firm with a controlled edge in the morning, and then we will start to see a transition in the afternoon as it warms up. It will get softer and there will be new snow coming. It a weird day so hard to predict the best time, but I think morning into early afternoon will be at its best.

We will be open for Night Skiing tonight but are going to shut things down a little earlier. Trails and the building will close at 7pm.

Another day of warmer skiing but it should be one for the books! We have a fast machine groomed granular but with control where you can get an edge in. Skating will be pretty nice today. Chanse is releasing the reins again and Tim is at the wheel (or the joy sticks to be more accurate) of the Husky this morning.

The snow has transitioned to a groomed granular. It will be faster in the morning but with a good edge. We were pleasantly surprised by the trails yesterday afternoon, although the morning will be better we expect the skiing to hold up really well and just get slower as it gets warmer. Liquids will be key. Make sure you are glide waxing, liquid waxing and using Easy glide to help your skis move. Chanse is out in the Husky tilling things up for us.

I was able to get out for a ski yesterday afternoon and had a great all be it slow ski. You won’t be stealing any crowns, making new PB’s or breaking any land speed records but it is an excellent way to get outside. I came across my friend Karen out on the trails and she made the great point of “it’s the best way to get outside and in nature without dealing water”. Sounds like taking a walk in town is kinda a mess right now!

I will say doing a early night ski might be in your best interests. Trying to catch it before the sun goes fully down and the temperatures start to drop will make it a more enjoyable ski.

February 25

We are getting just a little taste of spring this week and today is the peak of the warm weather. If you can try and get out for a ski as early as possible that will be the best time to ski. It will warm up quite a bit making it quite soft and slow this afternoon. I think we will see the biggest transition around 1030 or 11.

Waxing for the conditions, using liquids and Easy Glide will make a huge difference today. We want to be gliding on the snow not just sliding.

Chanse has groomed with the Husky. He started out with the snowmobile and Ginzue but wasn’t quite doing the trick so he switched.

We aren’t really sure what to call todays snow type. It’s not powder but its not granular….so we are going to stick with machine groomed butter. It is very smooth which should make for some fast skiing. Our skate skiers are on a winning streak with skate being the technique of choice. At least for the morning, as it starts to warm up it will get softer. If you can mange to ski in the morning conditions will be a little better, although still quite good in the afternoon just a little more Spring like. Higher winds today so we may see some drifting on Back Red, Woolner and Teal’s Tango.

Get Active Club for skiing and snowshoeing today at 2pm. I will be skate skiing if anyone cares to join.

It’s the moment all the skate skiers have been waiting for…..it’s a skate day! The skate skiers will be just itching to get out. It is a fantastic day for both classic and skate. Do not miss out on the ski today!

Looks like a stellar day on snow today. The base has finally had a chance to settle since the new snow so skate will be much more doable today. A warm wind coming our way so you will see some drifting on the Back Red, Woolner and Teal’s Tango. Chanse has regroomed everything with the Husky.

What would I be wearing while on the trails in the cold?

Top, 3 to 4 layers: my warmer base layer, merino baselayer that I use for a mid layer, maybe a light fleece (for me I find a fleece too much for a solo ski, although would have keet it if I was skiing with others) and jacket on top.

Bottom, 2 layers (I never wear more than 2 just change the weight): my warmer base layer, and heavier outer pants. Proper underwear makes a difference too! The no cotton holds true to underwear just as much as your base layer.

Accessories: warm hat (Sauce Chill Toque), regular weight buff, warmest mitts (Auclair Gigatex, again I find these too much for a solo ski but good if I was skiing with someone), and my Lorpen socks. I usually put on some vaseline on my cheeks and lips to help cut the wind and add a layer of protection. It won’t specifically help with frostbite but it helps with wind burn.

Bottom line don’t let the cold scare you off! You may discover you can enjoy being outside even when it is cold.

Another 11cm of fresh snow. Thank goodness too because it was starting to get a little thin out there in case you hadn’t noticedπŸ˜‹

Chanse has regroomed with the Husky. Still on the soft side but it is shaping up to being a really nice day. Chanse ended up triple tilling everything yesterday to try and widen the trail up again as it was starting to feel a little narrow.

Come out for night skiing tonight! Looks like a nice evening ahead, bring your headlamp.
