Chanse is away so Tim is in charge, we will try and not let it go to his head. The rain held off for most of the day and didnt start until 2 and had little effect to the trails. Tim has taken out the snowmobile and cleaned up the skate lane with the ginzue. The track is still good from yesterday. It will be a great day for skiing! Easy glide and ensuring your skis are waxed will be key today.

Tonight is the first night of Night Skiing. Experience the trails under the stars ✨ Well maybe the cloudy stars tonight.
Trails will be open until 8. Please ensure you are out of the parking lot by 8. As you likely know we received a lot of damage during the April ice storm and there is still some work being done on the lights. Not everything will be lit as normal. But don’t let that stop you! Explore the trails using a headlamp is its own special kind of magic.

We received 15cm of some very excellent snow yesterday. No offence to any of the other snow that has arrived this season but it is probably some the best snow we have received, in regards to base building. Chanse is riding shot gun today with Tim in the drivers seat. Everything has been regroomed with the Husky. There is a prediction of freezing rain today. Looking at the radar we are going to see a blip of it in the morning around 10 but then all clear for the balance of the day. Beyond that skiing will be really great today. It will be fast but fun. Likely worth ensuring you have easy glide and your skis are waxed.

First day back after the break…might as well play hooky. Skiing is going to be fantastic today. Snow from yesterday has been mixed into the base as Chanse regrooms with the Husky. You may find things slightly snow-covered with the fresh snow that is currently falling.

Another beautiful snowy day on the trails. Chanse has regroomed everything with the Husky and conditions are in excellent shape. If you didnt get the memo the Woolner Loop is now open! It will be soft and there are a few spots that have bled up but it’s in pretty good condition.

Here is where everyone chimes in but it’s COOOLLDDDD. You are right it is cold but with some proper layer choices you can still have a fantastic ski I promise! Once you are in the trees and out of the wind it will be much better. I have added some layer suggestions to help you get outside today.

What would I be wearing while on the trails in the cold?

Top, 3 to 4 layers: my warmer base layer, merino baselayer that I use for a mid layer, maybe a light fleece (for me I find a fleece too much for a solo ski, although would have keep it if I was skiing with others) and jacket on top.

Bottom, 2 layers (I never wear more than 2 just change the weight): my warmer base layer, and heavier outer pants. Proper underwear makes a difference too! The no cotton holds true to underwear just as much as your base layer.

Accessories: warm hat (Sauce Chill Toque), regular weight buff, warmest mitts (Auclair Gigatex, again I find these too much for a solo ski but good if I was skiing with someone), and my Lorpen socks. I usually put on some vaseline on my cheeks and lips to help cut the wind and add a layer of protection. It won’t specifically help with frostbite but it helps with wind burn.

Bottom line don’t let the cold scare you off! You may discover you can enjoy being outside even when it is cold.

10AM Update:

What a way to start the new year. It is a beautiful sunny day with little to no wind. Now sitting at -14 it is only getting warmer. I know the cold feels like a lot but when there is no wind trust me it is worth getting out. But that isnt the reason for my Conditions Update. I am here to say that Chanse has managed to get the Woolner Loop open! It will soft and as Chanse says not 100% perfect but it is a great start to building a great base down on that trail.

It has snowed 10cm since 4AM. Let’s keep these good times rolling! Chanse is regrooming everything with the Husky. Since it is still snowing you will find the trails snow covered. A lot less wind today but you will find the open areas a bit drifted. It will be a great day to be outside!

Please remember that the building is closed at 2:30 today. We request you start making your way off the trails at 2 so staff can head home in a timely fashion to see their families.

It was a wild day yesterday! I hope people stayed safe and cozy. Chanse ended up taking out the Husky in an attempt to catch the snow that was blowing around yesterday. He was in the machine from 5AM until 1:30PM. Thats a long time! He also took care of branches and major debris on the trails of which there was quite a lot. The time yesterday has paid off. The fresh snow is mixing nicely into the base. Chanse has regroomed with the Husky today. It will be a bit thin on Teal’s Tango. You will also find the open areas drifted. There is some mega wind today. I would choose a trail in the shelter of the trees. It is also pretty chilly out there but don’t let that stop you! I have added some layer suggestions below.

9:15AM Update:

It has not been an easy call but we have decided to close the trails today. Chanse is working hard on the trails but the wind is so fierce that what his is grooming is immediately glazing over making conditions icy. It is snowing so once the wind dies down we should be able to till that into the base to make for some good skiing. Unfortunately it is just not safe out on the trails today and frankly with that wind it wouldn’t be a nice day to ski anyway!

I know everyone is holding their breath to see how we faired last night. And the answer is we are doing pretty good! We will need people to have some patience. We are delaying opening to 10AM, and we will do a full report at 9AM. Chanse has not been able to get to far to really access how it is looking. He has taken the snowmobile and ginzue to chew up the skate lane. The track will be staying in place and is icy, but the skate lane is getting broken up pretty nicely. It is currently trying to snow, which will help things.
